Boot Time: Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 4 vs. Windows 7 RC

I know, I know, there's a miliard videos comparing boot time out there, and this one is no different. In the following video you can see two computers with the exact same specifications booting Windows 7 Release Candidate and Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) Alpha 4.

  2. That's quite crazy!!

I'll be jumping on the Karmic bandwagon come beta 1 - and even faster boot times are welcome!

  3. Does the Ubuntu machine have all the 3D effects enabled? I highly doubt it! Does the Windows 7 machine have Aero enabled in all of it's glorey? You bet you!!!!

Do you know how much longer adding all the 3D effect can add to ubuntu start up.

I can see that the Windows machine has been used waay more then the Ubunutu base on the number of favorites in the firefox program! Does this mean the person taking the video uses their Windows 7 machine more? Why is that?

Have you ever tried putting a linux machine into hibernation with 3D effects enabled? Good luck! It's worse then Windows 2000's hibernation/sleep mode. lol

I love smoke and mirrors :)

  7. Ubuntu has already beaten windows 7 in booting time .With ubuntu 9.10 booting in mere 12seconds compared to windows 7 which takes 15 seconds ..Take a look at why windows 7 can't kill ubuntu.

  8. 3D effect has nothing to do with slow hibernation time on Ubuntu. When I remove 3 Gb from my 4 Gb machine, hibernation speeds up crazy. It is just the amount of RAM that matters.
